PHCS Postdoc Education
The Department of Public Health and Community Service manages several formal and informal educational activities, all designed to enhance dentists’ knowledge and clinical skills in clinical dentistry and in serving vulnerable and under-served populations. DPHCS administers the General Practice Residency (GPR), also referred to as “hospital dentistry” program and the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. Additionally, we deliver many of the required courses to those pursuing a Master of Science in Dental Research, a Doctoral of Science in Dentistry degree programs, as well as those dentists pursing clinical specialization. In addition to teaching, the epidemiologists, and statisticians of the Department support student research projects, from research design to Institutional Review Board submissions and review to data analysis and interpretation. PHCS faculty serve as research mentors or thesis committee members for degree candidates at the Dental School and across the medical campus.
General Practice Residency Program (GPR) and Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program (AEGD)
The Tufts University General Practice Residency Program (GPR) and Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program (AEGD) provide residents with diverse clinical and educational experiences, both at training sites in Boston and Maine. The GPR program is Boston-based and the AEGD program is based both in Boston and in Maine. At the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, training emphasizes general dentistry including diagnosis and treatment planning, preventive dentistry, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, periodontal treatment, and endodontics for medically complex patients and for the general population. Residents also receive instruction through Tufts Dental Facilities in treating patients with multiple disabilities and limitations. Residents receive training in emergency care through rotations in the Emergency Clinic at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and at Tufts Medical Center. Training for the Maine-based residents of the AEGD program includes clinical instruction at Community Dental clinics in Portland, Biddeford, and Lewiston. Training emphasizes general dentistry including diagnosis and treatment planning, preventive dentistry, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, periodontal treatment, endodontics, and emergency care for patients with multiple disabilities and limitations, pediatric patients, and the general population.

Graduate Epidemiology Course (for Postgrads)
The Epidemiology course is an introductory mandatory course for all students in postdoctoral education, those in clinical residencies and those pursuing Masters or Doctoral degrees. The course covers how disease is distributed and measured; elements of time in disease occurrence and progression; measures and statistics of association; definition of risk factors; quantification of the effect of risk factors; specific aspects of epidemiological methods (design and analysis); causation; modeling; validity and reliability of health measures and more. Emphasis is placed on the design of population and clinical studies to control for confounding and to eliminate bias. The content of the course is structured to develop the ability of graduate students to conduct risk assessment and to critically reflect on concepts of population health.
