Program Goals and Objectives

The goal of the Fellowship in Advanced Pediatric Dentistry is to enable enrolled fellow(s) to engage in advanced, focused studies in pediatric dentistry. Individualized plans will be developed with faculty mentors and may include but are not limited to: cleft lip and palate treatment, traumatic dental injuries, pediatric endodontics, and other areas aligned with the fellow’s interests and career goals.

Participation in didactic seminars, literature reviews, and mentored clinical practice enhance the fellows’ opportunities for future academic or clinical leadership roles. Fellows will collaborate with their mentors and program director to set goals, define milestones, and document progress throughout the program.

The Fellowship in Advanced Pediatric Dentistry is an intensive, 12-month program designed to provide specialized training beyond the standard advanced education program. The curriculum is highly individualized, focusing on the fellow's specific interests while ensuring a robust foundation in core advanced topics. The program is structured around three key components: didactic education, clinical practice, and scholarly activity.

The fellowship is a full-time commitment, approximately 40 hours per week. The time between didactic learning and clinical experience is distributed to balance advanced clinical training with dedicated academic learning and may be adapted to accommodate the specific program goals and content for individual fellows. In general, however, the Fellow(s) will likely spend:

~50% (~20 hours per week): Didactic & Research Component including:

  • Pediatric Dentistry Literature Review;
  • Seminars on Special Topics (e.g., cleft/craniofacial care, behavior management, trauma);
  • Independent Study Modules;
  • Research

~50% (~20 hours per week): Clinical Component

Fellow(s) will have the opportunity to get hands-on training at the TUSDM Pediatric Dentistry Clinic. In the clinic, Fellow(s) can expect to receive:

  • Focused hands-on patient care in areas of specialization as defined by the fellow's individualized plan (e.g., cleft lip/palate, traumatic injuries, endodontics);
  • Clinical mentoring, treatment planning sessions, and experience performing complex procedures.

The Fellowship contains a research component that sets aside dedicated time for a scholarly project, which may include data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation. Fellows are expected to produce at least one case report or clinical paper suitable for publication or presentation.
