Breaking new ground at Bates-Andrews Research Day

Predoctoral and postgraduate students throughout the dental school came together to share their research from the previous year at Bates-Andrews Research Day on March 8.

This year, 65 students and residents presented their work on the 14th and 15th floors of the dental school, providing new research in basic science, public health, dental education, and dental materials. Attendees were able to provide instant feedback on presentations through the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiative created by organizers Eileen Doherty, assistant professor in prosthodontics and senior director of predoctoral student research, and Jennipher Murphy, education technology senior administrator. Each presenter was given a QR code that attendees could scan and link to an anonymous survey about the presentation.

The annual event also included a commercial exhibition and a keynote address from Robert Milman, senior clinical advisor at the Center for Health Communication at the University of Texas at Austin’s Moody College of Communication. Milman presented “Distilling Your Message” an interactive plenary about how to create messaging about research for audiences who are not in the sciences. Milman received training from the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University.
