DOROTHY VANNAH, M.Ed., R.D.D, C.D.A. Director of the Simulation Learning Center and Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnosis and Health Promotion, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.


This course will focus on preventive measures in dentistry by presenting modern information and techniques on the following topics:

  • Pit and Fissure Sealants
  • Fluorides
  • Protective Mouthguards/Athletic Mouthguards

The course will involve a lecture review of preventative dentistry methods, and a hands-on component.

During the hands-on portion of the class, participants will practice placing sealant material on both extracted and demonstration teeth, which can later be used for patient education in the dental setting.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the techniques and materials involved in contemporary pit and fissure sealants
  • Assist patients in understanding the benefits of preventive dentistry and discuss techniques for educating patients about fluoride therapy
  • Understand the benefits of protective mouthguards and to know the steps involved in their creation
