Description

This course will offer an overview and hands-on experience on the topic of dental sleep medicine, and will include information on the history, epidemiology, pathophysiology and medical consequences of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Course participants must register by 10/22/2014**(one month prior to the course date) in order to allow for the pre-fabrication of oral appliances:

  • Course participants will be given information on fabricating an oral appliance prior to the course and will be asked to work with a participating oral appliance company to order a discounted oral appliance
  • Participants will be asked to bring their pre-fabricated oral appliances to the course itself so that the appliances can be worked on during the hands-on portion of the course
  • This will include fitting and adjusting the oral appliances, as well as morning jaw repositioning and bite registration.

The updated practice parameters from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommend the use of oral appliances for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea who do not tolerate positive air pressure therapy. Oral appliances are increasingly used in dental practices to treat OSA. Short and long-term side effects may occur while using appliance therapy, and it is recommended that dentists offering sleep oral appliance therapy be educated about the diagnosis, prevention, and management of common side effects, including TMDs, occurring with the use of oral devices. Participants attending this seminar will gain an understanding of the tools and training needed to achieve outstanding results in the management of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea patients with the use of oral appliance therapy. **Course participants will be asked to work with an oral appliance company to fabricate an oral appliance prior to the course date
