TUSDM staff, faculty and students recently traveled to the 2014 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session and Exhibition, which took place March 15 – 18. Nearly 50 TUSDM students, faculty and staff attended the session, which took place in San Antonio, Texas. Here are just a few of the awards and honors the TUSDM community received at ADEA:
Dean Huw Thomas Installed as Chair-elect of the ADEA Board of Directors
The members of the ADEA House of Delegates elected the dean by majority vote to Chair-elect of the Board of Directors on March 18. Prior to his appointment as Chair-elect, Dean Thomas served as a member of the Administrative Board of the Council of Deans and as ADEA Board Director for Deans.
“As dental educators, we have a unique opportunity to help shape the future of our profession; we should be passionate and bold and embrace that opportunity,” Dean Thomas said upon accepting his appointment. “As such, I am deeply honored and most privileged to have been elected for the position of Chair-elect of the ADEA Board of Directors.”
Dr. Lily T. Garcia, the current Chair of ADEA’s Board, said the dean has demonstrated “dedication to furthering the mission of the Association and to improving oral health care,” and will be a great asset to the organization. Dean Thomas began his new role on March 18, and will serve as Chair-elect for one year. He will then be installed as Chair of the Board at the conclusion of the 2015 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in Boston on March 10, 2015.
TUSDM faculty and students honored
Several Tufts students and faculty members received awards and honors during the Annual Session. First, the ADEA Student Chapter at TUSDM received the Distinguished Chapter Award, which every year goes to five ADEA school chapters that display excellence in educating and motivating students, faculty, and the dental community.
Among the faculty honored was Dr. Harish Gulati, Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Diagnosis and Health Promotion, who was appointed Chair-elect for the organization’s Special Interest Group on Internationally Educated Dental Professionals (IEDP). Dr. Nicole Holland, Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health and Community Service, received the ADEA/AAL Faculty of Color Tuition Scholarship for Professional Development for the ADEA Summer Program for Emerging Academic Leaders. Dr. Yun Saksena, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnosis and Health Promotion, was elected Chair of the ADEA Special Interest Group on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. And Dr. Roya Zandparsa, Clinical Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry, was named one of ADEA’s 2015 Leadership Institute Fellows. One of 23 fellows selected, Dr. Zandparsa will participate in the year-long educational experience to prepare for leadership roles.
Several TUSDM students were also recognized during the meeting. Shawheen Saffari, D16, was elected as an ADEA Policy Center Liaison. Dave Cho, D14, received second place in the ADEA Student Poster Competition, and Heather Leung, D16 received third place. Finally, three students and their mentors were recognized for completing the ADEA Gies Foundation AADR Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program: Courtney Michelson, D14, mentored by Dr. Saksena; Irina Dragon, resident in the Department of Periodontology, mentored by Dr. Paul Stark, Professor and Director of the Division of Academic and Graduate Education; and Yusuf Bhatti, D14, mentored by Dr. Wanda Wright, Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health and Community Service.
