Lisa Gualtieri, Ph.D., Sc.M. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. She teaches courses on Online Consumer Health, Social Media and Health, Mobile Health Design, and Digital Strategies for Health Communication. Dr. Gualtieri earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Harvard University. She writes a blog about health at http://lisagualtieri.com and is on Twitter at @lisagualtieri.

Nicole Holland, D.D.S., M.S. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health and Community Service and the Director of Health Communication, Education, and Promotion at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She earned a D.D.S. with distinction from New York University College of Dentistry and an M.S. in Health Communication from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dentists are faced with understanding what social media is, how to use it in their practice, how to use it to connect with colleagues and professional societies, and how their patients are using it. The dual challenges are to learn best practices while mitigating risks of social media use. This course focuses on how to successfully develop and implement a strategy for the professional use of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Pinterest and how to integrate social media into a practice website.

Course Logistics:

This course will be a combination of lecture, case studies, discussion, and hands-on activities.

Learning Objectives:

By the time this course ends, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Understand best practices for selecting, setting up, using, and monitoring social media
  • Be conversant with how social media is currently used by dental practices, patients, and dental organizations
  • Know the most popular social media technologies and their potential for dental practices
  • Know how to access timely information pertinent to a dental practice
  • Understand the risks and how to mitigate and respond
