Job Description for Directors

Volunteer Responsibilities & Expectations:

The Executive Council of the Tufts University Dental Alumni Association (TUDAA) is comprised of 13 alumni who work to maintain a strong relationship between the school and the alumni body. The first six years of a member’s tenure are in the role of director. The Executive Council votes on topics including fundraising allocations, events and programming, alumni award recipients, and enjoys a close connection with the Offices of the Dean and Development and Alumni Relations. All members serve on at least one committee each year.

Attendance at each monthly meeting is expected and missing one meeting per year is acceptable. Meetings take place at the school from 6:30-8:30 pm the first Monday of each month, except May, July, August and September. Participation at local TUDAA events is highly encouraged so that leaders are visible and accessible to fellow alumni. Speaking engagements are frequent and some travel is required while in the president’s role.

Annual financial support of the school through the Tufts Dental Fund is expected and a leadership gift at the Dean’s Inner Circle level is suggested.

Term of Service:

Annual nominations. Standard progression: six one-year terms as a director, three one-year terms as Assistant Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President and President. One year follows presidency as Chair of Nominating Committee.

Program Description:

The TUDAA Executive Council is formed through nominations and members must live in close proximity of Boston in order to attend meetings. Each must have demonstrated strong support for TUSDM prior to nomination.

Established in 1900, TUDAA maintains and promotes strong relation between its members, encourages good spirit toward the school, and works in cooperation with the administration, faculty, staff and students for the welfare and betterment of Tufts. TUDAA membership is made up of annual dues-paying alumni around the world. In 2010, over $24,000 was raised by the organization for its scholarship and student loan programs.

Among the many initiatives with which TUDAA is involved include Homecoming & Reunion Weekend, the Wide Open Golf & Tennis Tournament, the semi-annual Tufts Dental Medicine Magazine, regional alumni receptions, Senior Class Dinner & Awards Ceremony, and several student scholarship and loan programs.

Staff Support:

The staff liaison in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations coordinates the following: TUDAA Executive Council meetings including attendance, agenda, catering and space reservation; dues solicitation mailings and deposits; content of TUDAA pages within the magazine; management of all event details throughout the year. Most communication with board is via email.
