Operative Dentistry is one of the branches of dentistry that deals with the art and science of the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and prognosis of diseases or trauma to teeth. Operative Dentistry is indicated primarily for dental caries, malformed, discolored or fractured teeth and replacement or repair of existing restorations. Treatment should restore proper tooth morphology, function, esthetics and harmonious relationship with the surrounding tissues.
The mission of the Division of Operative Dentistry is to support the academic goals of the institution through teaching, patient care and research. Our primary goal is to complement the preclinical operative experience of our students and provide high quality didactic and clinical instruction to undergraduate students in the discipline of contemporary Operative Dentistry.

Operative Workshop – Introduction to Clinical Materials
Course Director: Dr. Melissa Ing
Class Year/Course Duration: Sophomore/April to August
A workshop to introduce students entering the clinic to the available restorative materials they will utilize while treating patients in the clinic. All of the materials available in the clinic dispensaries are identified and discussed with respect to how to use them along with appropriate circumstances for their use.
Operative Preparatory Workshop (OPW)
Course Director: Dr. Peter Arsenault, Dr. Angelica Gil-Levin
Class Year/Course Duration: Junior/September to December
This is a series of workshops in simulation clinic. These workshops are a refresher to the preclinical course in operative dentistry for new clinical students. Topics covered include directly placed restoration preparation design, materials manipulation, polishing, bases/liners and alternative materials for temporization.
Operative Simulated Patient Competency Exam (OSPCE)
Course Director: Dr. Peter Arsenault, Dr. Angelica Gil-Levin
Class Year/Course Duration: Junior/September to December
Operative competency examinations are given in the simulation clinic on manikins. The preparation and restoration of one amalgam and one composite restoration under simulated clinical conditions introduces the students to the clinical evaluation process and assists the student to make appropriate self-assessments.
Operative Clinical Competency Examination (OCCE)
Course Directors: Dr. Peter Arsenault, Dr. Ralph Fowler
Class Year/Course Duration: Senior/September to April
This is a senior year patient-based operative clinical competency given in a simulated dental licensing examination format. Its purpose is to assist students in preparing to take the clinical restorative portion of a regional or state licensing examination.
Board Review – Part III (Licensing Examinations)

Class Year/Course Duration: Senior/First Trimester – One Session
Review lecture in Operative Dentistry to assist students taking the NERB dental licensing examination.
Operative Board Preparation
Course Director: Dr. Peter Arsenault
Class Year/Course Duration: Senior/Second Trimester – Two Sessions
This is a supervised Typodont Workshop practice session before the NERB clinical examination regarding amalgam and composite preps. The workshop has a short lecture regarding the operative portion and practice preps. The second session is scheduled in a two week span when all students are back from externship.
