Division Head, Hiroshi Hirayama, DDS, DMD, MS, FACP
The Division of Graduate and Postgraduate Prosthodontics has the responsibility of teaching both Graduate and Postgraduate Prosthodontics and Advanced Education in Esthetic Dentistry (AEED). The Postgraduate Prosthodontics Certificate Program is responsible for teaching postgraduate students in all phases of prosthodontics including esthetic dentistry and implant prosthodontics. It provides a learning environment to train the future leaders in the discipline and specialty of prosthodontics for the new millennium. The program also provides care for patients that require comprehensive treatment in all of the advanced phases of prosthodontics. The Advanced Education in Esthetic Dentistry Program covers all phases of esthetic dentistry including treatment planning and functional occlusion concepts. The program also provides training in CAD/CAM technology and a computerized shade matching system.
Program Description
The Postgraduate Prosthodontics Certificate Program combines traditional Prosthodontic concepts and techniques with the latest innovative technology and research conducted at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) to train residents to successfully diagnose, restore, and maintain the craniofacial complex for optimal health and well-being. The study of evolution, growth, and development of the craniofacial system provides the structural framework for the program. The latest technological developments in jaw movement, occlusal contact, and force distribution are combined with esthetic considerations and the finest laboratory techniques to rehabilitate patients in need of craniofacial reconstruction and rehabilitation.
The Postgraduate Prosthodontics Certificate Program is three years in length and prepares residents for specialized clinical practice and/or an academic career. Extensive clinical and laboratory phases of prosthodontic training are offered in esthetic dentistry, fixed and removable partial dentures, complete dentures, implant prosthodontics, and didactic and clinical exposure to maxillofacial prosthetics. Comprehensive courses of study are also offered in the basic and applied sciences.
All residents are encouraged to pursue a Masters of Science degree. A Masters of Science Degree may be pursued concurrently with the Certificate Program upon approval by the program director and the Graduate Studies Committee and is contingent upon the student’s academic performance during the first year of study. Successful completion of a Certificate in Prosthodontics and a Master of Science Degree usually requires at least three years and the successful completion and defense of a Master’s Thesis. For additional information please visit the following website.
The Postgraduate Prosthodontics Certificate Program starts July 1 of the first year and ends May 31 of the third year of the program. Upon completion of the program the student receives a Certificate of Achievement in Prosthodontics which qualifies the student to apply for and take the American Board of Prosthodontics (ABP) Certifying Examination. All residents are required to take Part I and a section of Part II of The ABP Exam prior to graduation. The program provides broad and sufficient support to take the ABP Exam during the residency. For additional information regarding the specialty of Prosthodontics, visit the American College of Prosthodontists website at http://www.prosthodontics.org.
The Postgraduate Prosthodontics Certificate Program satisfies all standards as established by the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation as stated in the latest version of the Accreditation Standards for Advanced Specialty Education Programs in Prosthodontics. For additional information, visit the ADA website.
The program will conduct interview sessions during the month of September. For further information on applying to the Postgraduate Prosthodontic Certificate Program at Tufts University go to the following website.
