Class of D2012 Clinical Advancement Ceremony
The eighth annual Clinical Advancement/White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2012 was held on March 13 at the Marriott Copley Place Hotel in Boston. The annual ceremony formalizes and symbolizes the transition of pre-doctoral students from basic science, biomedical science and pre-clinical education to the responsibilities of delivering patient care in the school’s clinics. Nearly 925 family members, faculty and staff recognized and honored the 167 students in the class. Tufts Executive Vice President Patricia Campbell represented the University. Associate Dean Nancy Arbree was the presenter of the event that included opening remarks by Dean Lonnie H. Norris and Executive Associate Dean A. Joseph Castellana. Associate Dean James Hanley led the class in reading the Oath of the Dental Student. Presenters of the white coats included Dean Lonnie H. Norris and Associate Deans James Hanley, Gerard Kugel and Maria Papageorge.
This year 16 faculty members and Deans shared the reading of the students’ names: Noshir Mehta, Charles Rankin, Paul Kwan, Mark Gonthier, Catherine Hayes, Barry Briss, Lynn Solomon, Peter Brodeur, Terrence Griffin, Kanchan Ganda, Joanne Falzone, Ekaterina Antonellou, Wanda Wright, Walter Meinzer, Stanley Alexander, and Paul Vankevich.
Faculty, alumni and family members helped the students don the traditional white lab coat as part of the ceremony. This year, 14 Tufts Dental alums assisted in “coating” their children or other relative. The ceremony concluded with a luncheon at the hotel and tours of the dental school, with guided discussions in the new 14th floor Simulation Clinic led by Associate Dean Arbree and faculty members, Dr. Joanne Falzone, Dr. Yun Saksena, and Dorothy Vannah. Postgraduate residents in Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics were also available to answer questions as families toured the new clinical floors of the school.

The seventh annual Clinical Advancement/White Coat Ceremony for the Class of D2011 was held on March 21,2009 at the Marriott Copley Place Hotel in Boston. Approximately 880 family members, faculty and staff attended to celebrate the 154 students in the class as they moved to the patient-care phase of their dental education. Tufts Executive Vice President Patricia Campbell spoke to the gathering.
The annual ceremony formalizes and symbolizes the transition of pre-doctoral students from basic science, biomedical science and pre-clinical education to the responsibilities of delivering patient care in the school’s clinics. Various members of the Tufts faculty participated in reading the student names while faculty, alumni and family members helped the students don the traditional white lab coat as part of the ceremony. This year we were pleased to have 12 family members who are alums of the school participate in the white-coat ceremony to coat their child or sibling. The ceremony concluded with a luncheon at the hotel and tours of the Dental School.
The Sixth Annual Clinical Advancement/White Coat Ceremony for the Class of D2010 was held on March 15, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Boston. The ceremony formalizes and symbolizes the transition of the pre-doctoral students from basic science, biomedical science and pre-clinical education to the responsibilities of delivering patient care in the school’s clinics. Approximately 600 family members as well as Tufts faculty and staff attended to celebrate the 159 students in the Class of 2010 as they moved to the patient-care phase of their dental education. Tufts Vice Provost Peggy Newell provided greetings and an introductory address.
The tradition of allowing Tufts faculty and alumni to assist family members in the class to don the white coat as part of the ceremony continued and there were 18 family members who were able to enjoy this personal moment, extending the family tradition of becoming clinically educated Tufts graduates.
Following the event all students and guests enjoyed a buffet lunch and had the option to take a guided tour of the Dental School.
The International Class of 2010 Clinical Advancement Ceremony was held on July 23, 2008 at the School of Dental Medicine. More than 80 family members, friends and Tufts faculty and staff were in attendance to formally recognize the 23 students as they transitioned into the clinical phase of the program.
Dean Lonnie H. Norris, Associate Dean James Hanley, and faculty members Robert Doherty and Iqbal Singh gave introductory remarks and welcomed the class into the clinic. The ceremony was followed by a luncheon.
