Emergency Clinic
Overview
For patients who have acute pain, swelling, and urgent dental needs, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine has a walk-in Emergency Dental Clinic that sees patients on a first-come, first-served basis. The Emergency Clinic reserves the right to prioritize the order in which patients are admitted to the clinic in certain situations.
Hours
Tufts’ Emergency Dental Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm and has two sessions: a morning session and an afternoon session. We recommend that patients arrive early because the Emergency Clinic sometimes fills to capacity due to high demand. The Emergency Clinic is especially busy on Mondays and the days after holidays.
When Tufts’ Emergency Dental Clinic is closed (e.g., nights, weekends, and holidays), emergency services may be obtained by calling Tufts Medical Center at (617) 636-5000 and asking for “Emergency Dental Care.” (Note: Tufts Medical Center’s hours and fees are not the same as Tufts’ Emergency Dental Clinic’s hours and fees.)
Fees
The basic Tufts’ Emergency Dental Clinic fee is $80.00, which covers the emergency diagnostic exam and the work that is done to temporarily relieve pain. If you need to have a tooth extracted, there will be additional fees, which will vary depending on the tooth location and the difficulty of the extraction.
Payment and Insurance
Payment is expected at the time of service. Tufts’ Emergency Dental Clinic accepts cash, personal checks, and Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit and debit cards.
We also accept Mass Health, Delta Dental, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and coming soon, Commonwealth Care. If you have one of these insurance plans, please bring your insurance card, photo identification, and co-payment with you to the Emergency Clinic. If you have other dental insurance, we will provide you with payment documentation (i.e., a receipt and list of services provided) so that you can file a claim for reimbursement with your insurance company.
