Sky Breaking Ceremony

Sky Breaking Ceremony held on May 2, 2008
On May 2, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine celebrated the beginning of the Vertical Expansion Project with a sky breaking ceremony on the plaza outside the school.

About 80 members of the Dental and Medical community and the surrounding Chinese community came together for the historic event, including guests Provost Jamshed Bharucha, Dean Lonnie Norris, Associate Dean Joseph Castellana, Director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, John Palmieri, and the Dental Board of Overseers.

It was an opportunity to bring together all of the partners involved in the project and thank them for their support.

Guests also signed a banner representing the partnerships that made the project a reality: the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Shawmut Design and Construction, ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, and the City of Boston. The banner will be on display for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2010.

The ceremony concluded with Dean Norris lighting a beacon, which was raised and displayed from a crane on the roof. Dean Norris pointed out that in Chinese symbolism, a crane (the bird) depicted among clouds stands for longevity, wisdom, and nobility and that it is Tufts' hope that this project also will bring these gifts to the Boston community.
