The ninth annual Clinical Advancement/White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2013 was held on March 26th at the Marriott Copley Place Hotel in Boston. The annual ceremony formalizes and symbolizes the transition of pre-doctoral students from basic science, biomedical science and pre-clinical education to the responsibilities of delivering patient care in the school's clinics. Nearly 850 family members, faculty and staff recognized and honored the 177 students in the class. Tufts University Vice Provost Peggy Newell represented the University. Associate Dean Nancy Arbree was the presenter of the event that included opening remarks by Dean Lonnie H. Norris and Executive Associate Dean A. Joseph Castellana. Associate Dean James Hanley led the class in reading the Oath of the Dental Student. Presenters of the white coats included Dean Lonnie H. Norris and Associate Deans James Hanley and Noshir Mehta, as well as Dr. Michael Kahn.
This year 13 faculty members, Deans, and alumni shared the reading of the students' names: Mark Gonthier, Iqbal Singh, Terrence Griffin, Joanne Falzone, Kanchan Ganda, Joseph Castellana, Ekaterina Antonellou, Peter Brodeur, Vassiliki Cartsos, Walter Meinzer, Hans Peter Weber, Charles Rankin, and Joseph P. Giordano, D79, DG84.
Faculty, alumni and family members helped the students don the traditional white lab coat as part of the ceremony. This year, 13 Tufts Dental alums assisted in "coating" their children or other relative. The ceremony concluded with a luncheon at the hotel and tours of the dental school, with guided discussions in the new 14th floor Simulation Clinic led by faculty members, Dr. Joanne Falzone, Dr. Yun Saksena, and Dorothy Vannah. Postgraduate residents in Endodontics, Orthodontics, and Prosthodontics were also available to answer questions as families toured the clinical floors of the school.
