MISSION STATEMENT
VISION: Patient Centered Education Committed to Excellence
Tufts University School of Dental Medicine is an accredited private dental school providing education to diverse predoctoral and postdoctoral students to prepare them for the practice of dentistry in the 21st century, with knowledge of many different populations, dental specialties, and varied practice settings. This education occurs in an ethical and professional environment in which quality dental care is provided to its patients.
We strive to achieve a dynamic curriculum, which provides excellent clinical training, utilizing technology to integrate health science with clinical experience. Our success is based on maintaining a strong faculty and staff committed to teaching, administration, student service and community service, supported by ongoing development, scholarship, and research.
FOREWORD
This handbook is published to acquaint you with the policies of the School of Dental Medicine and to provide information that may assist you during your enrollment in our school and during your stay in the Boston area.
We are a school that is committed to teaching patient care through a curriculum that encourages the pursuit of excellence.
Our school continually strives to be a community of students, staff, and faculty who focus their efforts on excellent patient care. You should share this focus. While at Tufts you will learn the basic science background needed for patient care, the techniques required for procedural treatment of patients and how to diagnose and treatment plan, and then treat specific patient problems.
More importantly, you will learn in a community environment that encourages your best effort. This is a community which, in your third and fourth years, supports communication with patients about their care, helps you develop management skills, requires ethical and professional treatment of patients and encourages participation in our commonly held goals.
Much of the information in this booklet details procedures, rules and regulations that support the teaching and learning environment.
We wish your participation in our community to be both rewarding and pleasant. Dental school years are rigorous; nothing of value is achieved without hard work. You will learn much and you will make lasting relationships. It is hoped you will become and remain, as an alumnus, part of our extended community of practitioners who have learned to pursue excellence.
STATEMENT OF EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
Applicants for admission and employment, students, employees, sources of referral of applicants for admission and employment, and all unions or professional organizations holding collective bargaining or professional agreements with Tufts University are hereby notified that this institution does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, or mental or physical disability in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in its programs and activities. Any person having inquiries or complaints concerning Tufts University’s compliance with the regulations implementing Title VI, Title IX, Age Discrimination Act of 1975, or Section 504 is directed to contact the Medford/Somerville campus, 627-3298. The Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action has been designated by Tufts University to coordinate the institution's efforts to comply with the regulations implementing Title VI, Title IX, Age Discrimination Act of 1975, and Section 504. Any person may also contact the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, Washington, D.C. 20202, or the Director, U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, Region One, Boston, Massachusetts 02109, regarding the institution's compliance with the regulations implementing Title VI, 34 C.F.R. Part 100; Title IX, 34 C.F.R. Part 106; Age Discrimination Act of 1975, 45 C.F.R. 90; or, Section 504, 34 C.F.R. Part 104.
Also, Tufts has formulated an administrative policy that educational and employment decisions be based on the principle of equal opportunity. The consideration of factors such as sex, race, color, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, age, religion, veteran status, or disability unrelated to a person's ability, qualifications, and performance is inconsistent with this policy.
Location
The School of Dental Medicine is located in downtown Boston on the Tufts Health Sciences Campus. These thirteen acres encompass the Health Science Schools and the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging. Adjacent to, and contiguous with the Tufts facilities, is the New England Medical Center Hospitals, Inc. Within this complex of buildings, the School of Dental Medicine occupies the Dental Health Sciences Building, which was completed in 1973. The School of Medicine is housed primarily in the Arthur M. Sackler Center for Health Communications and the Medical and Veterinary Building on Harrison Avenue. The Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences enrolls doctoral candidates in the basic biomedical sciences and is located on the eighth floor of the Sackler Building. All basic science departments of the Tufts Boston Campus serve the two professional schools (dental and medical), the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.
ADMINISTRATION
The Dean of the School of Dental Medicine is responsible to the University administration for all activities and programs within the School. The associate deans, directors, and department chairpersons assist the Dean in conducting the affairs of the School. The School’s governing body is the Executive Faculty. All major policy decisions originate with this body. The general policies contained in this handbook have all originated with the Executive Faculty or one of the Standing Committees. Students are represented on most of the Standing Committees.
