Faculty biographies
Hamasat Gheddaf Dam, D.M.D., Dr. Med. Dent. Education and Training 2008-Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA - Implantology Fellowship Clinical Focus Dr. Gheddaf Dam believes strongly in catering to each patient's dental needs by formulating a treatment plan that will best suit the patient's individual requirements. Her multi-disciplinary approach to patient treatment arises from her broad training in various domains. She has extensive training and experience in dental surgery of simple and complex extractions (including wisdom teeth), dental implant surgeries (involving both placement and restoration), and esthetic dentistry, especially with all-ceramic restorations (onlays, crowns) and veneers. Her services also include fixed bridges, full mouth reconstructions, treatment for bruxism (teeth grinding), removable partial dentures, complete dentures, and teeth whitening. Research Interests Dr. Gheddaf Dam's primary research interest lies in dental implants combined with bone regeneration, especially in the esthetic zone. Publications and Presentations She has two publications in progress: her doctoral thesis on bone level changes around dental implants ("A 5-6 Year Radiological Evaluation of TPS/SLA Straumann Implants: Results from Private Practice") and a study of bone grafting following dental extractions ("Socket Preservation Following Tooth Extraction as a Precursor to Implant Therapy"). She has presented her research at several national and international dental meetings, notably for the Academy of Osseointegration, the European Association of Osseointegration, and the European Federation of Oral Surgery Societies. Michael A. Kahn, D.D.S. He has a special interest in the early detection of premalignancies and mucocutaneous blistering diseases. He is a highly-regarded and well-known expert on oral cancer. Research Interests Dr. Kahn conducts clinical research on the early detection of oral cancer and the management of aphthous ulcers (canker sores). Publications and Presentations Dr. Kahn has authored over 80 articles, abstracts, and book chapters in peer-reviewed journals as well as a therapeutic drug book and has presented numerous abstracts at national meetings. Dr. Kahn has lectured over 400 times both nationally and internationally on a variety of oral and maxillofacial pathology topics and is a frequent speaker on the management and treatment of common oral soft tissue disorders. Nitin Khankari, DMD, BDS, MS Education & Training
Clinical Focus: Reconstructive, Implant, Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Khankari's clinical work includes complex reconstructive, comprehensive restorative treatments, all aspects of implant dentistry, smile design with veneers, and denture treatments both complete & partial. While treatment planning, his special emphasis is on using a multidisciplinary approach to meet patient expectations and include implant prosthodontics if indicated by evidence based research. His expertise include utilizing state of the art techniques with excellent esthetic management of restorations, even in the most complex situations like performing full mouth reconstructions on natural teeth, implants, patients who grind or clench their teeth and temporo-mandibular disorders. Dr. John C. Madden, BSc. BA. BDentSc. Dr. Madden graduated from Dublin Dental School at Trinity College, Dublin Ireland where he was elected as class president and was a member of various hospital and academic committees. Dr. Madden later attended Harvard University's School of Dental Medicine where he studied Prosthodontics. He is currently a full time faculty instructor within the Department of Prosthodontic & Operative Dentistry at Tufts University. He has presented both locally and internationally. Dr. Madden also has extensive experience in dental trauma, complex extractions, and oral surgery from his internship at a level one trauma center in Louisiana State University. Dr Maddens interests and experience include prosthodontics and implant dentistry, fixed and removable prostheses, and esthetic/cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Madden also has experience in managing temperomandibular disorders (TMD), parafunctional/grinding habits (bruxism), and the role of dentistry in achieving maximum performance in professional sport at International level Dr. Madden has won international awards and recognition which include the International College Of Dentists. He has also worked in private practice before returning to academics at Tufts University. He is a member of local state dental academic societies and clubs which help him keep up to date with the latest advances in dentistry, materials, and techniques. Dr Madden's services include esthetic dentistry and the use of all ceramic restorations, in-office and at home teeth whitening services, bridges and crowns and the restoration of implants, and also removable partial and complete dentures including overdentures (dentures attached to teeth or implants to improve their stability and retention/fit).
Eduardo Marcuschamer, D.D.S., M.Sc. Dr Marcuschamer graduated with honors from "Universidad Tecnologica de Mexico" Mexico City, receiving the Dean's List Award. He did a one year residency at the "Instituto Nacional de Perinatologia" in Mexico City. He graduated from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine's three year Postgraduate Program in Periodontology and Advanced Implant Dentistry. Dr Marcuschamer is currently instructor of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Marcuschamer is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and he lectures both nationally and internationally.
Yumi Ogata, D.D.S., M.S Dr. Yumi Ogata specializes in Periodontics and Implant Surgery. She earned her dental degree, D.D.S, at Kagoshima University School of Dental Medicine in Japan. She completed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery fellowship program at Kumamoto University, Japan. Through the program, she completed training in complex surgical extractions and dental sedation. Dr. Ogata completed her specialty training and earned Specialty Certificate in Periodontology from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She earned her degree, Master of Science, M.S., from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. In the program, she has had extensive training in Periodontal non-surgical procedures (Scaling and Root planing, Periodontal Medicine) and Periodontal surgeries (Periodontal plastic surgeries, Flap surgeries, Regenerative surgeries) as well as Implant surgeries (Implant placement surgeries, Bone Grafting). Dr. Ogata is currently a full-time faculty in the Department of Periodontology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She has given many presentations and lectures at various dental meetings and conferences. For instance, she served as a guest lecturer at the Yankee Dental Convention in Boston and was selected as a Chair and speaker at the International Association for Dental Research, IADR. She presented her research topic on dental implants associated with bone grafting. She has publications in her specialty both nationally and internationally. Dr. Ogata is dedicated to providing her dental care with the great emphasis of patients' comfort and highest quality of esthetics and functions to her patients.

Research Interests Dr. Papas' research focus has been to identify and find novel therapies for the treatment of high-risk patients, using science transfer and dry mouth (xerostomia). She is currently the Study Chair of a Multicenter NIDCR grant, Prevention of Adults Caries, testing a new method of preventing tooth decay. She has conducted multiple studies on Sjogrens syndrome. Publications and Presentations Dr. Papas has published numerous papers based on her extensive clinical research experience in the fields of Geriatric Dentistry, Sj?gren's Syndrome, medically-compromised patients, and xerostomia. Education and Training 1967 Everett High School, Everett, MA Clinical Focus Dr. Rankin has practiced and taught clinical endodontics for 25 years. He practiced at NH Endodontics in Concord NH for 13 years before coming to TDA. Military Background Dr. Rankin served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1995. He was a dental technician for four years in, served as a general dentist for five years and practiced as an endodontist for nine years. Dr. Rankin retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1995 being stationed at South Ruislip AS, England; Ramstein AB, West Germany; Hanscom AFB, MA; Andrews AFB, MD and the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Publications and Presentations Dr. Rankin has published in several journals including the Journal of Endodontics and the national Dental Compendium. He also has lectured locally, nationally and internationally. Volunteer Activities For several years, Dr. Rankin has been the faculty advisor for the Alpha Omega dental fraternity participating events such Tooth Day at Fenway when Red Sox fans may receive oral cancer screenings and preventive dentistry information. He also spent time in Peru with the Hispanic Dental Association treating orphaned children as well as people from the local community. Dr Rankin has served as a mentor for dental students for several years and is the faculty advisor for those students with military scholarships. Alberto Sarmiento, .D.D.S. Doctor Sarmiento graduated with honors from Metropolitan University in Barranquilla Colombia in the top of his class in 2000. He did two years residency program in Advance Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) specializing in implants, restorative and esthetic dentistry. He is also a Clinical Instructor of Oral Diagnosis for the General Dentistry department at Tufts school of Dental Medicine. Dr Sarmiento is an active member in the Board of trustee of the Massachusetts Hispanic Dental Association. For Dr Sarmiento his main goal is to offer a comfortable and relax atmosphere at his practice combine with the opportunity to provide the best care for his patients overall dental and psychosocial needs.
