Overview

The Orthodontic department at Tufts is considered to be one of the best in the world. Conveniently located in downtown Boston, we offer comprehensive orthodontic care. Services include early treatment for children, traditional braces for teenagers and adults, clear aligners for adults, and the most up-to-date and sophisticated orthodontic procedures, including surgical and implant orthodontics, for patients with complex problems.

Our services are provided by highly skilled residents -- dentists who graduated at the top of their dental school classes. The residents are supervised and taught by expert faculty who are leading-edge practitioners and who conduct research to advance orthodontic practice and improve oral health.

Orthodontists are dentists who have 2-3 years of additional training in the specialty of orthodontics.

When to Go to an Orthodontist

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that all children should visit an orthodontist as early as 7 years of age for the following reasons:

• With early detection and treatment of problem bites, orthodontists can help guide tooth and jaw development as children grow and adult teeth come in. This may prevent more serious problems from developing and make treatment at a later age shorter, less complicated, and less expensive.
• Early evaluation can help orthodontists determine the ideal time to start treatment.

Orthodontics for Adults (e.g., Braces for Adults)

Recent advances in orthodontic procedures (e.g., esthetic braces, clear aligners, and 3-dimensional digital imaging) have made orthodontics an appealing option for adults as well as children. At Tufts, we also work with other dental specialists to offer coordinated treatment for adults with complicated problems such as those that involve periodontal (gum) disease, missing teeth, and jaw problems.

New Patients

Please call (617) 636-6887 to make an appointment.

At your first appointment, you will receive a basic orthodontic evaluation by a faculty member or a senior orthodontic resident (a dentist who is completing an additional 2-3 years of training in the specialty of orthodontics).

Please bring the following to your first appointment:

• Dental insurance card and photo identification (if you have Mass Health or Delta Dental insurance)
• Dental or orthodontic x-rays, photos, or models of your teeth from the last year (if you have any)
• $30 payment (or consult fee) for the first appointment ? We accept cash, check, or MasterCard, Visa, or Discover credit cards.
• If you do not speak English and need an interpreter, please bring someone to assist you.

If, at the end of your first appointment, orthodontic treatment is recommended at this time, your treatment plan as well as costs and payment plans will be explained to you, you will be assigned to your own orthodontic resident and supervising faculty member, and your next appointment will be arranged.

Payment & Insurance

Monthly payment plans are available that take into account applicable insurance coverage and make orthodontic treatment more easily affordable.

Tufts Orthodontic Clinic accepts Mass Health*, Delta Dental, & Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental (MA & RI) insurance: Mass Health often covers orthodontic services for children under 21; Delta Dental and Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental (MA & RI) may cover orthodontic services for children and adults. Coverage will depend upon your individual insurance plan. Please check with your insurance plan or employer if you have questions about your coverage. If you have one of the insurance plans specified above, please bring your insurance card, photo identification, and applicable co-payment with you to every appointment.

If you have dental insurance other than those specified above, we will provide you with payment documentation (i.e., a claim form listing the services that we provided and stating that you paid for the services in full) so that you can file for reimbursement from your insurance company. It is each patient's responsibility to know your dental insurance benefits.

*Please note that Mass Health requires prior authorization for orthodontic services, Mass Health does not cover orthodontic services for ages 21 and over, and Commonwealth Care does not cover any orthodontic services. Please consult Mass Health for more information.

Tufts Orthodontic Clinic accepts cash, personal checks (with valid photo identification), and credit/debit cards with the official Visa, MasterCard, or Discover logo as payment for services.
