Smile Squad

What is the Smile Squad?

First organized in 1982, the Smile Squad is a student-run community outreach organization whose main focus is to improve the oral health of Boston and its surrounding communities. We accomplish this goal by promoting important dental concepts, such as prevention and nutrition. Through the Smile Squad, students have the unique opportunity to maximize their exposure to the dental health challenges in the community.

The Smile Squad places emphasis on oral health education by visiting schools in the Boston area. While in the classroom, student dentists discuss the importance of proper oral hygiene and nutrition through presentations, puppet shows, and one-on-one instruction, depending upon the age group of the children. In the past year alone, we have visited schools in Dorchester, Roxbury, East Boston, Milton, and Brockton, just to name a few. We also participate in health fairs, such as the Oak Street Fair right here in Chinatown. More recently, the Smile Squad has broadened its scope to include visits with special needs children and assisted living facilities.

The places we go and the people we seek to educate are only limited by member participation. Everyone is welcome! If you are interested in participating in Smile Squad activities, please attend the organizational meetings we have throughout the year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Smile Squad Faculty Advisor, Dr. Karen Wallach at 617-636-2755.

Welcome to Tufts and have a great year!
